Yet another delightful offering from the Cotton Goods label arrived this week entitled ‘Seo-ri’ from Chris Stewart’s project Need More Sources.
As always from Cotton Goods, this release comes in bespoke packaging and is strictly limited to 100 copies.
Below is a review from Boomkat along with purchase links. Be quick though as I imagine they will go in no time at all…
That heady aroma of musty libraries and unturned pages can only signal one thing (in the Boomkat office, at least – elsewhere it might merely signify that you’re at a library): a new Cotton Goods release. Yes, here’s another wonderful, highly limited (100 copies) release from the Remote Viewer/Boats-curated label.
My copy comes in a recycled hardback titled ‘The Art Of Dried Flowers’, but who knows what hoary old volume you’ll get – it’s all part of the Cotton Goods magic. The artist behind this installment is Need More Sources – aka Chris Stewart – previously heard on Moteer with his album, Shed.
Stewart’s brand of electronica takes on a boldly forthcoming sound in comparison with some of the more understated and mysterious contributions to the label’s recent run. This manifests itself in the spindly crackle of minimal electronics alongside string arrangements, folk-ish acoustic guitar passages and – when the opportunity arises, as on ‘Doastheysay Notastheydo’ – fully fledged beats.

Opening with the wide-panning clickety-clack of glitch rhythms, the album stirs slowly into life over the first couple of minutes, but soon the tide of digital crackle and bit-crunched melody collides with an assembly of swooping violins, setting the tone for all that’s to come; at the heart of the record is a contradiction between tiny, fragmentary electronics and a kind of Clogs-style folk-classical hybrid of chamber music.

One of the very best examples of this sound comes during ‘Bicycles’, a delightful electroacoustic melange that piles together bike-ride field recordings (complete with old-fashioned chirpy bell sounds) and string passages that have been so heavily compressed that they transmit a kind of soft-focus sugariness. In quieter moments you stumble upon gems like ‘Filter Tips’, which begins with the sound of someone traipsing playfully through puddles, only for peculiar ice cream van chimes to rise from the background. From here onwards various keyboard noises, tuned percussion, brushed drum kits and violins all flutter about the place in a florid, breezy fashion, resulting in a very lovely nine-and-a-half minutes of electronically quirked-up composition. – Boomkat review
