This rare Czech adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s story tells the tale of a man driven to rage and revenge when he hears his pianist wife and her lover playing Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata.
Czechoslovakia 1927 Dir. Gustav Machatý 95 min.
Presented in association with the Czech Centre, London.
With live accompaniment by acclaimed Czech percussionist Pavel Fajt and Peter Graham on piano.
Pavel Fajt
Pavel Fajt, Czech musician, composer, drummer and percussionist, has been a leading figure on the Czech music scene, crossing the boundaries of rock, jazz and ethnic music while developing his own unique style and sound. He has performed with such alternative-music icons as violin prodigy Iva Bittova, American percussionist Jim Meneses, Fred Frith, Tom Cora, Stepanida Borisova and others. In his solo performances for percussion and invented instruments he creates music out of repeated rhythms and percussive beats.
Peter Graham
Peter Graham, Czech musician and composer, first came to the Barbican in November 1989 when his Violin Concerto was performed there by the English Chamber Orchestra. This was thanks to composer David Matthews, who discovered his music in the late 80′s and helped introduce it to the United Kingdom.
Graham’s music presents a diversity of musical means, reflecting a wide range of influences from ancient and early music via jazz to everyday sounds. It is, however, usually transformative. Like Erik Satie, Graham is always prepared to start from scratch. Publishing widely on contemporary music, he currently teaches composition at Janacek’s Academy of Music in Brno.
