“Gold Leaf Branches” is a massive collection. it is an undertaking that is years in the making, one that often looked as though it would never be completed. but after endless hours of emailing, calling, and generally harrassing the 59 artists presented here, “Gold Leaf Branches” is complete.
This is a compilation with two simple motives:
To collect as much of the music i love from all over the globe in one place and to expose as many people as possible to numerous outstanding artists they might not have heard. “Gold Leaf Branches” succeeds with
flying colors. of the 59 tracks here, all but one are exclusive to this release. marissa nadler’s song also appears on her latest album, “the saga of mayflower may,” while an alternate version of six organs of admittance’s “thousand birds” appears on “dark noontide.” - Brad (Digitalis)
Boomkat review:
This maasively acclaimed, epic triple cd compilation is the work of ‘New Weirdness’ (Read: odd folk/psych experimentations) underground operatives Digitalis. The label has spent some time building up a name for itself with a rich catalogue of small-press cdr only releases, and now has used its network of artists to come up with a genre-defining compilation.
Much more accessible than the other collections on the scene, ‘Gold Leaf Branches’ succeeds in being straightforward and hugely enjoyable from start to finish, quite an achievement with three full length cd’s chock full of tracks.
I am critical of compilations at the best of times as I tend to think of myself as a paid up member of the artist albums club, but this collection does something for me – it hits the right artistic buttons while also serving as a great taster for a scene some might see as rather impenetrable. Just a quick look at the sleeve will reveal tens of names the uninitiated may find a little daunting at first (Kulkja? Oxblood Reincarnations? Agitated Radio Pilot?) Yet these are sandwiched between scene luminaries Six Organs of Admittance (Drag City/Young God), Charalambides (Kranky) and the lovely Marissa Nadler (Eclipse) among many others.
Each musician brings something different to the fold, there are pure folk moments, deep psych, ambient experimentations, field recordings, and free jazz, even spoken word is spoken for. Exquisitely packaged and screaming for your attention, this gorgeous and expansive slice of spiritual frolicking will come as manna from heaven for those dipping their toes into this mystifying scene, as well as those already well-versed in its strange lexicon. Essential listening.
