F.S.Blumm & Nils Frahm – Music For Lovers, Music Versus Time

“Music For Lovers, Music Versus Time” is an album that is in many ways reflective of its title…

A creation of sounds by two artists who one would imagine both very much enjoy what they do, it is also suited for listeners with a strong affection for recorded sounds and experimental musicianship. While it is not quite fighting against time, the album also requires some patience to appreciate its full accomplishment, but such is beauty of its quality recordings that repeated listens never prove a chore and in fact enhance the auditory experience.

The two artists at the helm of this project are F.S Blumm, the German multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for guitar play and fellow countryman Nils Frahm, the super talented pianist/producer. Both musicians have never shied away from improvisation in the past and the work here very much takes on the guise of free form recordings. Using a collection of pre recorded sounds from fellow musicians comprising of cellos, trumpets and vibraphones to name a few examples, Blumm and Frahm also incorporate natural day-to-day noises and blend these all together with more detailed guitar and piano playing. The result is an avant-garde approach to music which showcases two musicians set on creating something both fun and highly creative.

In terms of genre, it is near impossible to categorise this album. At times there are elements that sound like jazz such as piano swept “Heber,” while the Blumm’s enthused reed playing on “Writing Letters” recalls some of his earlier solo work. “Onward onward” has Frahm pull out his celesta evoking memories of last year’s “Wintermusik,” while album opener “Kugler” features the recording of a bouncing ping pong ball to act as a form of percussion. This organic approach to music is reminiscent of Japanese musician Yuichiro Fujimoto or the Korean filmmaker So Young Kim, both of whom use the natural environment as a source for their soundtracks.

This is certainly a “different” album and thankfully despite this it doesn’t feel forced. F.S Blumm and Nils Frahm have found a way through their collaboration, to showcase their passion for music and in turn provide their listeners with an opportunity to enjoy their work in a way that is by no means conventional. The album encourages listeners to love the sounds they listen to and by taking time to soak up the creativity and appreciate the artistry at work, the depth of the work on display here comes to life. – Review by Josh Atkin for Fluid Radio
