It’s In Our Nature’ is a collection of outtakes from a soon to be finished video installation that takes the viewer down into the deep of the Gulf of Mexico…

While I was editing the initial video installation Max Richter’s ‘Infra 1′ was spinning in the background on my hi-fi, unintentionally the sound and music somehow fit with some of the scenes I was cutting. I wrote to Mute Song and was graciously given permission to use the piece. The finished video installation will contain various hydrophone field recordings of the Gulf coupled with a subtle soundtrack from the ‘Refractors’. The footage consists of under/over ocean water imagery shot with a macro lens and without the use of special-effects software. Living organisms move pass the lens while color’s shift from serene to harsh.

This is not intended to be an anti-oil drilling PSA; the video is purposely devoid of any words or soapbox grandstanding allowing the viewer to drift in their own perception of the images. Why shoot this? Some things nag at your conscious and that’s usually the impetus for me to work on a project. Having grown-up in Florida and spending most of it in the proximity of the Gulf, it saddens me the sheer neglect of a vital source. I have been told with time nature has a way of correcting things. – Joseph
