Rural Route No.3 is the latest release in the series of 3″ CDRs from Toronto based print shop, publishing house and record label Standard Form. For the third offering, Martin Clarke has compiled eight tracks of field recordings made in Shetland, 2006…
The audio feels raw and unprocessed, it is also in short servings, with the longest at approximately five minutes and a few hovering around the minute mark. This suits the atmosphere of the captured audio well and helps to keep the momentum flowing.
If there is a misstep, it’s that the tracks can occasionally dwell on the stark minimalism on offer a little too much without evolving, but if releases of field recordings often serve to highlight the majestic splendour of nature then perhaps Clarke is better suited in his role here of attempting to accentuate it’s unforgiving bleakness.
At their best, the tracks impart a feeling of unrelenting despair, evocative of a scene from Cormack McCarthy’s masterpiece The Road.
Within this release, the London based sound artist and filmmaker succeeds in capturing sounds which are minimal and desolate, conveying the despair of that particular kind of loneliness felt while alone in remote and inhospitable surroundings.
Available now from Standard Form in a limited run of 3″CDRs manufactured in-house. – Review by Adam Williams for Fluid Radio
