For those unfamiliar with Richard Lainhart’s work, the composer uses lush strings, electronics and inspired arrangements to lull the listener into a contented oblivion, in a similar vein to ambient luminary Brian Eno. In fact, Lainhart is known for predating Eno’s debut full length ambient album, 1975′s Discreet Music with his own 1974 release, White Night..

Intended to serve as a taster for Lainhart’s attendance at the recent Avantgarde festival in Schiphorst this summer, the five track Cranes Fly West – Digital Schiphorst Edition 2010 features almost 52 minutes of sound, with two tracks taken from upcoming album Cranes Fly west, plus two exclusive tracks from Lainhart’s own archives and a previously unreleased remix.

Beginning with An Open Window In An Empty Room, long sleepy drones meander along as captured audio snippets of birds singing play in the background. Each successive track blends into the next, hypnotising the listener along the way. Every phrase feels effortless and Lainhart has a knack for economically squeezing the last out of each note, stretching it into oblivion.

On A Sense Of Loss, Lainhart introduces a beautiful and evocative minimalist piano part, each note carrying a tangible sense of weight behind it.

Released through Ex Ovo, the CDr has already sold out but is still available as a digital download from the label’s bandcamp site where the listener can pay as much or as little as one desire. – Review by Adam Williams for Fluid Radio
