I stumbled upon Circadian Eyes on The Silent Ballet web-site. The music immediately grabbed my attention on that Sunday afternoon journey through blogs and journals. Piano-based compositions with strings, ambience, and post-rock elements is actually what I like. From the catchy release “Rain” on his second EP to the “Finding Silence” single this is very decent music. I always wonder about two things: Why is it always just one guy behind those names? And why do young men not prefer guitar-smashing, head-banging speed-core?

Circadian Eyes is 22-year-old Bryan Collins from Saratoga Springs, New York. He considers his musical genre to be ambient piano post-rock. Well, it is hard to define a lot of music we play and promote at Fluid Radio. Why not call it by a tapeworm expression (this might be a very German expression, sorry) like ambient piano post-rock. Musical influences are Ólafur Arnalds, Sigur Rós, Explosions in the Sky, The American Dollar, and many other melodic post-rock bands.

“I learned about Circadian Rhythms about four years ago in a psychology class”, Bryan explained the uncommon name. “Circadian Rhythms are basically a 24 hour biological clock, or the processes that any living organism goes through during a day. I immediately found it fascinating that there was a term for this and just really liked the way it sounded. When I chose a band name, the word Circadian popped into my head and I knew I wanted to use it in some context. A lot of my music is based around childhood memories and how I saw the world then. So I chose to go with Circadian Eyes as my name, which I guess could translate to what we see day to day and how things change throughout our lives.”

Until now Circadian Eyes has released two EPs (“EP” and “Rain EP”) as well as an additional single (“Finding Silence”) on his Bandcamp page. They are free-of-charge, so feel free to pay a few Dollars if you like them. Bryan is currently working on writing and recording his first full length album, which should be released in early 2011 (aiming for Jan or Feb). Most of the piano parts are written and recorded so now he has to finish up with all the other instruments. Other than the recording of his new album, Circadian Eyes will have a brand new song on a Hawk Moon Records compilation scheduled for January 2011.

As an example for his music we chose “When We Float” from the Rain EP. Bryan: “I feel this song sums up my sound the best out of my released tracks. It has the slower, melodic, piano and strings sections, and the more intense section towards the end.”

Bryan plays on the whole social media clavier so you will find more about him here:
