Just prior to my tour this Autumn, I played a set at the studios of Dutch alternative radio Kink FM live on the air during the experimental radioshow X-rated, one of the longest running shows focusing on experimental music in general…
Having been there 3 times before with vidnaObmana and Fear Falls Burning, I felt immediately at home and at peace. The beauty is that you can transform that little corner of the studio into your own habitat, your own little private space in which you can work and perform without the distraction that frequently happens during live concerts.
The downsize is that you do have to squeeze your performance into the slots of the show and the station. It gives the music and performance now & then something of a rushed and forced feel, but this new song, Microphonics XVIII – a work in progress, had the correct flow, construction and harmonic quality.
Although I’ve tried to play this song to perfection on the past Autumn tour, it never came close to the harmonic quality achieved during this radio performance on Sunday October 17th 2010. – Dirk Serries
