Will Samson – Calescent

14th September will see the return of Will Samson’s vocal-led work, with the release of ‘Calescent’ – a stand alone track to accompany upcoming tour dates with S. Carey (Jagjaguwar / Bon Iver).

Following his recent instrumental ambient release “A Baleia”, Will returns to the style he’s most known for – subtle electronics, tape manipulated textures, lush string arrangements (performed by his long-time collaborator Beatrijs de Klerck) all fronted by his distinctive voice.

To quote musician Sylvain Chauveau’s response after hearing the track: “this track is totally you, totally your style: this beautiful falsetto, this production, this melody, this chord progression…”

Dear Beloved Listeners,

Since the beginning of the year, I have been tangled in audio tape and cables in a little makeshift home studio. Creating a new record usually takes far, far longer than one expects – and this has been the case this time around. Some creations just need a bit of extra time in the oven. However, with the final concerts of 2018 fast approaching, I wanted to share a taste of what I have been up to.

Some fellow musician friends recently joked that this is the most “Will Samson” track that they’ve heard. So, considering that this will be the first stand alone single track that I’ve released – it seems fitting that it apparently encapsulates much of my musical output.

Over the past few months, I have been delving into Carl Jung’s writings and became really fascinated with his concept of “the shadow” – a significant aspect of our unconscious that often guides us, but one that we dare not to look directly. That it is by directly facing our own shadows that we can become free of our psychological projections & patterns. These ideas helped to form the mood of what became ‘Calescent’.

I hope you enjoy the new music and I look forward to seeing some of you at the upcoming shows. – Will
